Ottman Challenges Industry to Engage Consumers on Sustainability

Introduces "Moving Sustainability Forward" Green Paper

Our founder, Jacquie Ottman got the attention of hundreds of Sustainable Brands '11 attendees in Monterey, CA on June 7, when she opened the conference by asserting, "Greenwash is not the real problem holding consumers back from getting more involved in sustainability."

She went on to illustrate how greenwash is merely a symptom of the real problem -- which she believes is an immature industry 'eco-system'. "The 'eco-system' of stakeholders that supports us is not broken...it just hasn't matured around us. We have marketers who are inadvertently greenwashing because they don't know better and claims are not being enforced by government or retailers."

Ottman, author of the recently released The New Rules of Green Marketing, challenged the audience with specific steps the industry can take to build the holistic support it needs from retailers, government, and especially consumers in moving sustainability forward.

Immediately  following her speech Ottman released the green paper "Moving Sustainability Forward", highlighting her insights on how to accelerate sustainability and make green marketing more productive.  For a copy of the paper see the attached pdf or click on the button on the left side of any page on http://www.greenmarketing.com

Marketri Recommends the New Rules of Green Marketing - May 19, 2011

Caitlin Kuscan of Marketri reviews the book and finds it full of great resources for companies looking to integrate sustainability into consumer brands. Here's an excerpt ...

"There are too many other great tips and stories in this book, that I don't have enough room to share them all here. I found the book to be a great read; ‘green' is changing the way we live our lives ... Jacquelyn mentions great companies and ideas being put into place, and reminds us that we need to keep in mind that the planet will always be here, it is for us that going green will bring the most benefit.

Bottom line: Whether your company is B2B or B2C, offering products or services, the over message is universal. Clients and consumers are accepting ‘green' products, services and methods as an expected social responsibility, even if it's just small steps. I recommend this book as a great read for gathering ideas to revamp, make small changes or simply for the lessons learned from other company's experiences."
